Allison King Band
Allison B. King is an exceptional musician with nothing less than exceptional vocal talent.
She’s been described as “a bundle of energy with a voice that will raise chill bumps” (Richard Emmett, Winston-Salem Events); “a musician who virtually bubbles with enthusiasm… like fine champagne,” (Diana Ornitz, Greensboro News & Record); a “blues diva,” (Joya Wesley, Greensboro News & Record), able to “move from a Whitney Houston upper-register whisper to a basso profundo, Etta James growl in the space of a measure,” (Ogi Overman, ESP Magazine).
The woman can sing - period.
And what a voice it is — soulful, powerful, jazzy, expressive, and wholly entertaining, there’s little King can’t conquer vocally, be it Bonnie Raitt’s rockin’ blues, Aretha’s soulful wail, Patsy Cline’s butter purr or Billie Holliday’s smoky vulnerability.
King puts her body and soul into every note she sings, and new and repeat audiences more often than not sit with their mouths dropped open from the pure, delightful shock!
Yes, the woman works hard!
King, who hails from both New York and Los Angeles (but has spent the last decade living and working in Greensboro, NC), fronts her own rock/soul/pop band aptly named the Allison King Band, (after a three year stint with Greensboro-based Timepiece, a wedding/variety band); as well as steady work in a variety of musical mediums, including studio recordings, commercials and live stage work.
Over the last eight years King has performed regularly with some of the Triad’s top variety bands including the Scott Adair Band, Ken Kennedy Band, Rob Massengale, Wally West Entertainment and the U.S. Air Band.
She also works regularly with the jazz combo Allison King & The Bitter 3, which performs in intimate jazz settings.
King performs — clubs, festivals, trade shows, prestigious parties, benefits, weddings, voice-overs, jingles, album cuts, you name it, she’s done it.
As an opening act, King is a force to be reckoned with — she’s brought down the house at PhoenixFest (an annual fundraising event for Greensboro’s Women’s Resource Center) three years running. Her performances were so utterly powerful, so soulful, and so overwhelmingly exciting that she nearly upstaged the headliner both times!
In July of 2000, the Allison King Band swept first place at the 14th Annual Piedmont Blues Preservation Society’s talent competition. That win led to gigs at City Stage, Bull Durham Blues Festival, opening slots at Ziggy’s and many other regional and national clubs.
The self-professed “diva-in-training” has also headlined the Chateau Morrisette Black Dog Jazz Festival for the past eight years, becoming one of the series’ most sought-after performers. Because King’s sets at the day-long festival incited so much dancing and merriment, the wine festival producers had to change future music contracts to stipulate a special warm-down set of soft jazz at the close of the day to calm guests down before the drive home!
For 2001, a special festival was created with Allison in mind – the Blue Dog Blues Festival (August, 2001) that featured two special concert performances. She has performed at that festival twice more including a record-breaking attendance show this past August.
2001 brought more additions to her hectic gig schedule — Along with the aforementioned groups, she now performs regularly as a duo with guitarist Bill Jordan – singing and playing acoustic guitar. She regularly plays in a duo and trio setting as well as a part of her newest band incarnation – Allison King and the Piedmonsters, a four-piece jazz/R&B band.
The woman has traveled and toured.
Allison King has toured and performed in exotic locales, such as Japan, Turkey and Bermuda, performed in clubs all over the U.S., (from New York to Los Angeles and many points in between), shared stages with acts as diverse as jazz great Carmen McCrae, blue-eyed-soulster Delbert McClinton, rock band Three Dog Night, soul master Ben E. King, blues gospel shouter Nappy Brown and blues master Eddie Kirkland, jazz diva Melva Houston, Saffire (The Uppity Blues Women), Gerald Alston, among others and even sung backup at Raleigh’s Alltel amphitheater for gospel/pop artist Denise Williams.
Of course, the printed word can only go so far. The only way to push this musical point home is to hear her for yourself. Chances are, Allison will be bringing the house down somewhere close by.
